There’ve been so many Public Holidays lately, we’ve completely lost track. Between the “Which Public Holiday is it today?” and the “What day is it again?” questions, we have given up trying to keep a proper calendar. Instead, we’ve defaulted to a simpler rhythm. If the shops are closing early and the neighbours are home, it’s probably time to light a fire.
So, if you’re stuck wondering what to do on a Public Holiday, don’t panic. We’ve got three solid plans that all involve flames, fresh air, and a Donkey Long Tong in hand. (Naturally.)
1. Braai. It’s Always Braai.
Let’s be honest, there’s only one right answer to “What should we do today?” when it’s a Public Holiday in South Africa: Braai. It’s practically not optional at this point. Whether you’ve planned for it or only realised this morning that today isn’t a regular Tuesday, braaiing is low-effort and high-reward. Grab a bag of wood, a few boerie rolls, your Donkey Long Tong, and the nearest available people. That’s it. You’re officially celebrating. And if you’re still finding your feet when it comes to fire management, don’t stress. We’ve written entire blogs on how to start a braai, braai rules, how to choose the best meat, and even how to braai steak, chicken and snoek! Consider us your fire advisors and tongs consultants.
2. Just Fire. No Meat Required.
Maybe you’re full. Maybe you’re too relaxed to cook. That’s okay. One of the best things to do on a Public Holiday is to light a fire just because you can. Seriously. A simple flame, a drink in your hand, and your Donkey Long Tong for the occasional wood shuffle. It’s not lazy. It’s therapeutic. We call it flame therapy. No need for food, just fire, a drink, and your thoughts.
Set up a fire pit outside or spark the indoor fireplace if it’s chilly. Sit back, invite the dog up next to you, and let the crackling do the talking. Bonus points if you invite a friend over just to sit and stare into the coals with you. No agenda. Just fire.
3. Camping (aka Braai with More Trees)
Want to make the most of that bonus day off? Pack the cooler, dust off the tent, and head into the wild. Camping is really just extended braai-time with a bedtime under the stars. Bring along your Jack Sack, because no one should be left out of the fun. There’s something magical about cooking on open flames while fending off chop thieves and telling stories that get wilder with every retelling.
So, next time you’re unsure what to do on a Public Holiday, don’t overthink it. Keep it simple. Keep it fiery. Whether you’re braaiing, camping, or just bonding with your fire like it’s your emotional support wood pile, your Donkey Long Tong is ready.
Now go enjoy those Public Holidays. You’ve earned it.
